Not surprising items: backpacks, pencil cases and various texts for all students, including dictionaries.
Elementary level: notebooks, pens, pencils, markers, folders, crayons, glue, construction paper, and rulers.
Middle/High levels: also need compasses, scissors, protractors, small white board and those markers.\
Surprising items: toilet paper, cleaning solution and cloths, and tissues. We ask parents to supply these.
Uniforms: skirts/pants, shoes, socks, shirts in school color with school logo. Parents supply PE uniforms.
Other surprising costs that we cover: school guard pay, payment per family for maintenance/upkeep of the school/property, charges during school year to repair sudden roof leaks or field trips re. educational content.
Classrooms: Picture 4 concrete block walls, up to 20 student desks and a teacher desk (all desks fight termites), a whiteboard and markers, open metal windows that allow weather, insects and small critters or birds inside, a few mounted fans to circulate air, bare bulbs and tangled electrical wires zigzagging crazily around the room. That is a typical room until a teacher adds posters and a few books on a shelf for educational purposes. “As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.” (Daniel 1:17)
HHHH works solely with the poorest in our area of Honduras. This means we establish connections with various squatter communities. Metal homes, single moms, jobless, lacking hope for their futures or those of their children are typical characteristics of the families to whom we reach out. Remember, part of our focus is supporting education or skills training for individuals. Through all our connections with people we hope to demonstrate God’s love to others created in his image. There is no lack of individuals who need help in Honduras. “The poor you will always have with you.” (Matthew 26:11)
